Laptop chargers can be a real pain sometimes, forgetting your charger when you have a high powered laptop that will only last a few minutes battery power makes the whole thing useless so the natural response would be to purchase a secondary charger that you can keep in your bags at all times.
Most aftermarket laptop chargers will boast about being universal and although many of them have switchable voltages and a range of different connectors that are simple to switch out to the one that’s right for your laptop, it’s easy to forget about the wattage.
When you have a low powered laptop, you don’t have to take into consideration what kind of power your charger is putting out, the only advantage of choosing one that doesn’t offer as much that remains enough for your particular device is the money you’ll save. But when you’ve got yourself a powerful laptop that requires the extra power to be able to run and charge at the same time, you’re going to notice a difference.
When purchasing a new charger for any kind of device, always try to check the amount of watts that the charger that came with the device offered, this kind of information is also usually available on the manufacturer’s website if you’re replacing a lost charger.
One of the best examples of wattage differences is with Macbooks, with the vanilla Macbook or smaller Macbook Pro models, a 60W MagSafe power adapter is enough to get the job done, but when you are using for example the 17” Macbook Pro, it is suggested to go for the larger 85W MagSafe power adapter.
