The Intel Atom N550 dual core processor is changing the face of netbooks so naturally it deserves its own review.
One of the more common netbook processors we’re seeing popping up all over the place is the Intel Atom N550 and it seems to be the obvious choice for most situations. This new chip has it all, the power, and fantastic energy efficiency and yet surprisingly it is affordable.
In recent benchmarks of the Atom N550, it has blown its competition out of the water, given the amount of multi-thread optimized applications and that it has become a standard feature in applications, it has never been a better time to invest in a dual core processor. 
With a processor that’s proved to be as powerful as this one has, you wouldn’t expect it to be as energy efficient as it’s competitors and yet this little wonder has surprised us once again, the N550 uses just 8.5 watts of power, only a little higher than the N450 which uses 8 watts but holds a reputation for providing unheard of battery lives of up to 14 hours. It sounds too good to be true, but a netbook processor that boasts roughly double the power of it’s predecessor with similar power consumption, the N550 is a serious CPU.
When pitted against other netbook processors, the closest in performance was the Atom D510 to which the N550 outperformed with the smallest margin. The important thing to remember here is that the D510 requires 13 watts of power, almost double what the N550 uses.
