Intel’s own definition of what a netbook is, is rather odd in that it belittles the functionality and versatility of netbooks in general, an extremely unusual behaviour from a company that currently has a firm grasp on the netbook industry in general.

Looking at the comparison chart provided, Intel is seemingly unaware of the power of their more recent devices, claiming that netbooks are incapable of watching HD movies, editing photos or even simple multi-tasking, this is certainly not the case with devices containing the latest Intel Atom N550 processors and less so with devices that have either an Nvidia ION graphics processor or an HD video processing card such as the ones from Broadcom.

Although it is true that netbooks cannot offer the power you would expect from a full sized laptop, this is not something to be looked at negatively as they were never designed to, even back in the early days of when I got my first netbook, the ASUS Eee PC 901, I was able to run Photoshop with little issue.

Intel claim that all portable devices powered by Intel Atom processors are in fact netbooks, clearing up the drama about whether or not to count 12” devices as netbooks or not and also keeping Apple smiling by keeping their 11” Macbook Air out of the netbook category, something they previously claimed were a waste of money.

The definition of a netbook is a difficult one to define, with advancements in technology, the definition advances with it.
